Under Feathered Wings
When a playful little owl reminded me of my name, my calling and the quiet joy of being held by God

π"He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler."
π―οΈ Pull up a chair, my friend, and let me pour you a cup of tea. Something small happened this week that has stayed with me far longer than I expected, the way a single feather drifts down long after the bird has flown.
I asked AI to give my personality a mascot. It was meant to be a bit of fun, a lighthearted moment in a full season. I didn't tell it what to choose; I simply let it decide. When the picture appeared, there she was: a fluffy little owl with crimson-tipped wings, round glasses just like mine and a tiny golden heart dangling from her ear. Her eyes were crinkled shut with joy, and in her wings she clutched a red book with a golden heart on the cover, a feather bookmark tucked between its pages.
Beside her sat a cartoon version of me, chin resting on my hand, smiling as though I'd known her all my life. Her tagline read, "Big encouragement in a small package!"
I laughed out loud. Then I sat very still, because somewhere beneath the laughter, Holy Spirit was whispering.
βοΈ I've come to call her FeatherJoyπ¦π, and the name settled on my heart like a gift I hadn't known I'd been waiting for. My name, Trixi, means bringer of joy. For a long while I'd quietly stopped calling myself that. Life has a way of pressing the joy out of us, layer by layer, until we forget it was ever woven into who we are. Grief, disappointment and the weight of carrying others can leave a heart feeling like a cracked clay jar on a windowsill, still standing, still useful, yet no longer quite whole.
Here was this little owl, holding the Word close to her chest, eyes shut tight with delight, reminding me of who I am.
πͺ¨ There's something deeply comforting about owls. They're known for wisdom, for seeing clearly in the dark, for keeping watch through the long night. FeatherJoy isn't perched high on some distant branch, though; she's snuggled right in, leaning close, wings wrapped around what matters most. That's the kind of wisdom I long for, a wisdom that doesn't stand aloof but draws near, a wisdom that carries the Word not as a weapon but as a treasure.
The more I looked, the more I saw the Father's heart in it. He doesn't shelter us from a distance either. He covers us with His feathers. He gathers us under His wings, close enough to hear His heartbeat, close enough to feel the warmth of His breath. When I'm weary, when I've poured out more than I've received, He doesn't scold me for running dry; He draws me in and lets me rest.
ποΈ I've been learning to surrender again lately, to stop trying to hold every broken piece together in my own trembling hands. I keep thinking of kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold. The cracks aren't hidden; they're honoured. Light catches in the very places where the vessel once shattered. I believe this is how God restores us. He doesn't erase our story; He fills the fractures with His glory until the places of deepest pain become the places that shine.
Perhaps that's why the joy feels different now. It isn't the light, carefree joy of a heart that's never been broken. It's the deeper joy of a heart that has been mended, a gold-veined joy that knows what it cost and still chooses to sing.
π "The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing." β Zephaniah 3:17 (NKJV)
π± Read that slowly, dear one. He rejoices over you. Before we ever bring joy to anyone else, we're the ones being rejoiced over. The joy I'm called to carry isn't something I have to manufacture or perform; it flows from the One who sings over me first. Like water finding its way back to the riverbed after a long dry season, joy returns when we come home to Him.
It makes me smile to think that God would use something as playful as a cartoon owl to speak to me. He's like that, isn't He? He meets us in the ordinary, the unexpected and even the silly, slipping His truth into our hands like a feather bookmark tucked between the pages of an ordinary week.
So here we are, FeatherJoy and I, an unlikely little duo with a Bible held close and hearts wide open. Big encouragement doesn't always come in grand packages. Sometimes it's a kind word, a warm hug, a cup of tea shared across the table or a feather drifting into your path just when you needed reminding that you're seen, loved and held.
May I be that for someone today, and may you receive it for yourself.
My story for His glory, changing the worldπ one πheartπ at a time. β Patrizia
Rest here a moment longer, beloved. You don't have to be strong or have it all figured out. The One who covers you with His feathers is near, and His love is quiet, steady and sure. Whatever this day holds, you're held within it. Let His joy find you again, softly, like a feather settling into an open hand.
- Where in your life has joy quietly slipped away, and what might God be wanting to restore? π€
- What does your name, or the name God calls you, say about who you were created to be? π€
- In what areas are you still trying to hold the broken pieces together on your own? π€
- How might it feel to let God gather you under His wings and simply rest? π€
- Who in your life needs a small package of big encouragement this week? π€
I am covered by His feathers and sheltered beneath His wings. My broken places are being mended with gold, and they will shine with His glory. I am rejoiced over, sung over and dearly loved. Joy isn't lost to me; it's being restored. I am who God says I am, and I carry His light wherever I go.
Father, thank You for meeting me in the small and unexpected places, for speaking through laughter, through feathers and through the gentle nudges of Holy Spirit. Thank You that You don't watch me from a distance but draw me close beneath Your wings. Where joy has been pressed out of me, would You pour it back in. Where my heart has cracked, fill the fractures with Your golden grace until even my scars reflect Your goodness. Help me to remember who You made me to be, and give me the courage to live from that identity again. Teach me to carry Your Word close, the way a treasure is held. Let me be a bringer of joy, not by striving, but by overflowing from the joy You sing over me. For every heart that feels weary, broken or forgotten today, draw them near, Lord, and let them know they're seen and held by You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
