A Letter Written but Never Sent

The story of a girl who learned to give everything away, and the Father who never stopped reading her heart

A Letter Written but Never Sent
πŸ“–"When my father and my mother forsake me, Then the LORD will take care of me."
β€” Psalm 27:10 (NKJV)

πŸ•―οΈ A Simple Question

In August, a dear friend asked me whether I'd read The Five Love Languages. He was curious about mine. I hadn't read the book, yet the framework landed: the idea that we all speak love differently. Some through words. Some through gifts. Some through touch. Some through service. Some through presence itself.

The question stung, as I realised something I'd never let myself see. I couldn't receive any of them.

Not one.

To a child, love is spelt T.I.M.E. and presence. That's the language I've been speaking my whole life, even when I didn't have words for it. It's also the language I learned to stop asking for, learned to stop expecting, learned to stop needing, since needing it got me punished.

✍️ The Vow

There was a time when I cried for what I needed. I cried for time. I cried for affirmation. I cried to be held. The presence I longed for didn't come, and the affection I reached for wasn't there. One day, crying was met with having my head shoved under cold water. Somewhere in that long, quiet absence, I stopped crying.

I made a decision then, though I didn't have words for it yet. I vowed I would never cry again, and that I would never let anyone see me cry. I vowed I wouldn't need the very things I had been crying for β€” not time, not affirmation, not touch, not even love itself. If I couldn't need them, they couldn't hurt me.

πŸͺ¨ A Different Language

So I learned a different language instead: acts of service. If I couldn't earn love by receiving it, perhaps I could earn safety by giving it. If I couldn't accept words of affirmation, perhaps I could become the kind of person who didn't need them β€” the useful one, the reliable one, the invisible one who asks for nothing and gives everything. If I couldn't earn time through crying, perhaps I could earn it through usefulness, invisible in the way that helps rather than hinders.

I would give it all away, freely and fully, but I wouldn't let it touch me. It would roll off like water off a duck's back.

Over the years, it became my habitual way, until it simply became who I was. The one who serves. The one who gives. The one who makes time for everyone else's needs whilst her own grow smaller and smaller, folded away like a letter written but never sent.

πŸ•ŠοΈ The Letter Opened

My friend's simple question opened that letter. Tonight my tears found their voice again, and they said what I'd never let myself say aloud: I desperately want to see myself the way others and God see me. My Father had been listening all along. He had kept every tear in His bottle, and He had read every word of the letter I never sent. He answered it simply: "I have called you by your name; you are Mine."

πŸ“– "But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.'" β€” Isaiah 43:1 (NKJV)

🌱 Gold in the Cracks

I'm learning that tears were never the enemy. Jesus Himself wept at the tomb of His friend, unashamed, and the God who holds the oceans has never once been too busy for the small, salty water of a child's grief. The cold water that once silenced me isn't the water He offers; His is living water, warm with mercy, washing rather than drowning.

I picture the little girl I was, still standing at the edge of that moment, and I see my Father kneel down beside her. He doesn't hurry her. He doesn't ask her to be useful. He simply stays, giving her time and presence, spelt out in the very language she understood first.

Like a kintsugi bowl, the places where I learned to break aren't being hidden or thrown away. Holy Spirit is tracing gold along every crack, gently and patiently, until what was fractured becomes the very place the light shines through. I don't have to earn the gold; I only have to let Him hold the pieces.

Perhaps this is where receiving begins: not in striving to deserve love, only in allowing myself to be found beneath His feathers, sheltered, seen, and held. The letter has finally been sent, and it has found its way home.

My story for His glory, changing the world🌏 one πŸ’”heartπŸ’– at a time. β€” Patrizia

If you've folded your own needs away for so long that you've forgotten they're there, please hear this gently: your Father hasn't forgotten. He knows every word you never said and every tear you swallowed. You don't have to earn His nearness by being useful; He simply stays. Rest beneath His wings tonight, dear heart. The letter is safe in His hands, and so are you.

πŸ’‘ Reflection
  • What language did your heart speak as a child, and what happened when you reached for it?πŸ€”
  • Are there vows you made in pain, never to cry or never to need, that still quietly shape how you live today?πŸ€”
  • Where have you been giving freely while refusing to let love touch you in return?πŸ€”
  • What might be written in the letter you've never sent, and are you willing to let your Father read it?πŸ€”
  • How might Holy Spirit be inviting you to receive time, presence, or tenderness this week?πŸ€”
🎺 Affirmation

I'm not defined by how useful I am or how little I ask for. I am called by name, and I am His. My tears are kept, my heart is read, and my need is no burden to my Father. I am free to receive as freely as I give. I am seen, I am held, and I am home.

πŸ™Œ Closing prayer

Abba Father, thank You for reading the letter I never sent. Thank You for keeping every tear I was never allowed to cry, and for never once looking away from the little girl who learned to fold herself small. I bring You the vows I made in the dark, the promises never to cry, never to need, never to let love touch me. I don't fully know how to lay them down yet, though I'm willing. Teach me the language of receiving. Let me feel Your time and Your presence in ways my heart can recognise. Holy Spirit, trace Your gold along every crack, and let Your light shine through the places I once hid. Where cold water silenced me, wash me with Your living water. Where I learned to be invisible, call me by name again. I want to see myself the way You see me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
